Having An Overcoming Spirit
This year we have been reading through the New Testament together as a church. Many of the books of the New Testament we have read so far were written by the apostle Paul. Despite his circumstances, challenges, dangers and trials he remained full of joy.
Joy is a hallmark of an OVERCOMING SPIRIT. An internal attitude that says “I cannot be defeated and I won’t give up because I know the outcome … I win!”
Knowing Jesus, who He is, what He has done and also what He has given us, is the basis of our faith. Our salvation is secure, won for us and God’s free gift to us when we believe. That salvation is then worked out through our lives as we follow the leading of the Holy Spirit and guaranteed to us provided we remain in faith until the end. All we have to do is believe and obey the leading of the Holy Spirit. The end point does not move!
Faith sees this future event as a current reality. No “if” or “maybe” to the question of our eternal destiny. Paul wrote “In all things God works for the good of those who love Him” (Romans 8:28). Circumstances were not allowed to control him but Paul goes on to write “in all these things we are more than conquerors through him (Christ) who loved us” (Romans 8:37). James used similar language when He wrote “Consider it pure joy whenever you face trials of many kinds” (James 1:2-3) concluding that it makes us complete and mature.
So how does this work? Is this practical?
Isaiah 12:3 says “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. In that day you will say “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name; make known among the nations what He has done, and proclaim that His name is exalted” (NIV). Thanksgiving, remembering our salvation and all God has done helps our joy level.
Psalm 19:8 says “The precepts of the LORD are right giving joy to the heart”. This Psalm talks about the Word of God, His Commandments & Laws. Just reading them will bring joy to our heart and increase our joy level.
Isaiah 56:7 says “I will bring [them] to my holy mountain and give them joy in my house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and sacrifices will be accepted”. Just coming to church to worship Jesus and giving Him our offerings of praise and finances will increase our joy level.
Isaiah 61:1-3 says “1The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me because the LORD has anointed me to … 3comfort those who mourn … provide for those who grieve … bestow a crown of beauty … and the oil of joy instead of mourning”. The infilling of the Holy Spirit is a guarantee of increasing our joy level.
Knowing God is for us and has already proved His goodness, reminding ourselves of His promises by actually reading them, being around His people and going on being filled with the Holy Spirit – simple but sure-fire ways to remain full of joy and overcome every situation, every day!
TODAY, I AM AN OVERCOMER! He who began a good work in me will carry it (and me) to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6)
