This week we have two stories in Acts 11 and Acts 16 involving Peter and Paul which although very different have a couple of common themes. Firstly we see Peter being told by the Holy Spirit to go to Cornelius despite his natural and cultural thinking having been different to this idea. Then we see Paul wanting to preach in Asia but was kept from doing so by the Holy Spirit and instead has a vision of the Macedonian man whilst in Troas leading to another people group hearing about Jesus. In both, the gospel is preached to a new set of people and in both situations it was as a result of the apostles following the leading of the Holy Spirit.
Years ago when I joined the church staff God was speaking to me about strengthening my spirit through reading the word, prayer, worshipping and specifically through praying in tongues. In 1 Corinthians 14v4 we are told that when we pray in the spirit we edify ourselves; we strengthen our spirits and over time this leads to us being more sensitive to the leading of the Holy Spirit. I started to pray for longer periods of time in tongues each day and saw loads of great things happening.
One story that sticks in my mind is the day when I had a sense that I should go from Glenn House (where the church offices were based) to the Sanctuary to collect something. I didn’t hear a voice or have a specific scripture but just a sense I needed to go and do that job at that moment. The timing was perfect because when I arrived in the car park I was just in time to stop a locksmith breaking into Studio4 to allow a gas man the ability to take out the gas meter due to a set of unpaid gas bills that we knew nothing about. A few phone calls later and the matter had been sorted without any damage to our buildings. If I hadn’t gone at that moment then it would have cost the church far more in repairs. God is so good that he covers every little detail in our lives! Whilst I got it right on that occasion there are plenty I haven’t done as well with but yet I know that when I spend time feeding my spirit and strengthening it then more often than not I end up in the right places on time to see God’s hand at work.
I want to be more sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading and just like Peter or Paul having my direction set by God and I’m sure you want this as well so why not set some more time aside this week to pray in tongues. When you do you may just end up being there for a work colleague, neighbour, friend or relative just when they need you most…or it may just lead to the gospel going to a new people group!
