I love how God wants to be involved in every detail of our lives. He is not a distant, uninterested God who doesn’t care about us, but instead He is the Almighty who wants to make a difference in every area of our lives.
One of the ways that He does this is through the Holy Spirit, and I love how Jesus explains so much of what the Holy Spirit is like in these chapters that we are reading this week. Jesus was completely human (like us) and we see in Luke 4 that He was full of the Holy Spirit and lived His life as a result of how the Spirit led him.
In the chapters we are reading this week, we see that Jesus is able to teach the disciples about the Holy Spirit: His character, His ministry, how He works and what He does. Jesus could do this because He knew the Holy Spirit completely.
One of the characteristics of the Holy Spirit is that He is the helper. In John 16 v 7 (ESV) it says, “Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send Him to you.”
We can clearly see from this that the Holy Spirit will come to us and be a helper. I love this aspect of the Holy Spirit because as I depend on Him each day I get the help that I need in every situation that I face.
This isn’t just spiritual theory but a really practical God, making a difference in the nuts and bolts of life. I have found over many years that it is vital for me to regularly involve Him in all decisions, problem solving, and even when I just don’t know how to do something. As part of the trinity the Holy Spirit is God and knows everything perfectly! He therefore knows the answers to all the problems that we face and can help us to overcome them.
How many times have I lost something and after a quick discussion (prayer) with the Holy Spirit, the answer comes to mind. The other day, for example, I couldn’t find an item of clothing for one of our children. After asking for help, I suddenly thought to look downstairs in a place I never would have considered and sure enough there it was! Not only did it give me what I needed but it saved me loads of time!
Other times I have needed a parking space, and again after asking for help, I have felt prompted to go down a particular row in the car park. Sure enough a space is right there or opens up as I drive down.
In work, when I am faced with a project that I have no idea how to start, and feel completely overwhelmed the Holy Spirit gives the ideas of where to start and helps me through the whole project so that I do a great job. He helps me to succeed.
He is the best helper in the world, and I know I don’t get Him as fully involved as I should. How much easier would my life be if I did? I want to encourage you this week to ask the Holy Spirit to help you every time that you are stuck or need an answer.
The Holy Spirit has been given to you and He is the Helper.
