Speak Out

All through the chapters in Mark that we read this week we see the importance of how we use our tongues. Right from the start we find the disciples arguing amongst themselves about who is better than who – a problem the world still seems to face today!

This is followed by a man asking what he must do to be saved, Jesus speaking about going to Jerusalem to die and then James and John asking for a very special request. Next, we hear the cry of the blind man wanting to get Jesus’ attention so he can be healed.

So many questions, statements and uses of the tongue in very different and interesting ways. Recently as I have been reading through Genesis, the Lord has been showing me the importance of language, words and what we speak out. At the very beginning of time, we see that creation came into being through what God spoke. It was His words that brought life into nothingness.

After the flood, we see that each of the people groups that were birthed had their own language and words. By using the same language, they could work together, build together and grow together. When we have the same language, and the unity that comes from this, then nothing becomes impossible for us. This is even more the case when we align our language to what God is saying and start to speak His words out.

In Mark 11:23 it says

“Truly I tell you, if anyone says to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and does not doubt in their heart but believes that what they say will happen, it will be done for them.

We have been made in God’s image so just like in creation we can bring changes to the world around us through what we say. When we are faced with a mountain of work we can either accept it as a problem or command it to get out of our way. When there is an issue going on within our families we can either find a label or reason for it or we can start to bring the positive change that needs to happen by speaking to it, even if it is seemingly impossible.

There are two parts to seeing this work. The first is we must speak to the situation what God’s word is. The second is that we have to believe that what we are saying is going to happen.

When faced with a problem mountain, we need to align ourselves with what God is saying, agree with His version and not what is facing us in the natural and then crucially speak to it so that we bring the change that is needed.

Challenge: Throughout this week, why not see what words are coming out of your mouth and see if they are in agreement with what God is saying. And if you are facing a mountain in any area of your life, start speaking to it and see it move!
