We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commands. Whoever says, “I know Him,” but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in that person. But if anyone obeys His word, love for God is truly made complete in them. (1 John 2:3-5)
So who is Him? He is not only the one and only God, but for our benefit, He is also manifested in three Persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
Our Heavenly Father is greater than all; even our Lord Jesus was submitted to Him. He is our Creator, and He has a plan and a purpose for each of His children. Our Lord Jesus came not only to save us but to show us the way: This is how we know we are in Him: Whoever claims to live in Him must live as Jesus did. (1 John 2:6) Our Lord Jesus' life is our reference for how to conduct ourselves in every situation. The Holy Spirit lives in us. He teaches us the truth, reminds us of His word, and is our advocate and guide.
As you can see, our loving God not only created us, but He made Himself like one of us to save us, to show us the way, and then He did not leave us alone. Instead, He made us His living temples so He could live with us now and forever. Basically, He made sure we have everything we needed to truly know Him and have complete intimacy with Him.
The above might not be new knowledge to you, but the real question is: Do you know of Him, or do you know Him? We can fill ourselves with information, but what are our actions telling us? The scriptures say obedience is our only proof.
Why obedience? I believe it is a matter of trust. For example, if I am out with my children, hold their hands and give them directions to where we are going, they will obey because they trust me and know me. However, if I decide to hold the hand of a random child in the street and try to lead him/her somewhere, they will probably (and hopefully, if well trained) start screaming and running away from me, looking for their parents. Even if they know of me (or knew me through their parents), they are likely still not to follow my orders and will want to check with their parents first. They don’t trust me and, therefore, won’t obey me.
If we truly know God and know He only wants the best for us, we can trust Him and we would not hesitate to be obedient to His Word and commands. We would be quick to obey! So, do you know Him? Or better still, how well do you know Him?
