I love Psalm 31 because we can really see King David as a man, as a real human, and not just as a made-up character; someone who really lived and went through some hard times.
And that’s what I love about King David. He was a guy who was real with God when things got bad, when he didn’t do things right and when he did do things right. He was real with God.
In this Psalm, people had turned from him and he was in trouble. But the amazing thing is that he wasn’t going to other people for help. He was going to God.
It says in Psalm 31:5 (NLT)
“I entrust my spirit into your hand. Rescue me, Lord, for you are a faithful God.”
His prayer wasn’t, “I just want to give you this situation God”, but “I want to give you my everything: my spirit, the thing that will never die, I put it into your hands because I know you are faithful!”
Sometimes, we as humans can fall into a trap of looking to others for help and in some situations that is right. But why do we go to people, who don’t know the answers or know what the best thing to say is in the situation?
We so often go to the human wisdom instead of the wisdom of our God and Father who will never give us the wrong wisdom in situations.
And that’s what I love about King David: he only went to God. Yes, he mouthed off a bit here and there at God but he always came back round because he went to the source of wisdom and life.
King David knew where his help came from: it came from the Lord. Psalm 121:1-2 (NLT) says,
“I look up to the mountains - does my help come from there? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!”
Today, maybe you are going through a hard time; maybe you have to make some hard decisions; maybe a work or family situation is really hard.
Let me encourage you today: your help comes from the Lord. Take time out today to talk with your Heavenly Father, the One who made you, who made the universe, who loves you and who knows what you need.
Today, come and be real with your God. Tell Him where you’re at and what’s going on, for He WILL come through for you, your work, your family, your job… He is a faithful King, God and Father to you.
Today, your help comes from Him. Today, pray and give it to Him and be like King David so that you know that your help comes from Him!
