He Did It Before and He Will Do It Again

15 January 2021

Hands holding a circular loaf of bread

Did you know that Jesus fed the crowds twice? In Matthew 14 we see Jesus feeding the five thousand with 5 loaves and 2 fish, and then again in Matthew 15 we see Jesus feed four thousand with seven loaves and a few little fish.

The miracles are very similar. Crowds gathered around and listened to Jesus teaching. It must have been for a long time because in both chapters it says Jesus had compassion on them. Now it’s not normal to have compassion on someone who’s a little peckish. They must have been there for a while and were HUNGRY!!!

One was five thousand men plus women and children, and one was four thousand plus women and children.

  • Both times they were fed with loaves and fish. Both times Jesus gave thanks for the bread, broke it and gave it to the disciples to distribute.
  • Both times the crowd ate to their fill.
  • Both times there was plenty left over, more than they had started with.

It looks like God, who is the author of creativity did the same miracle twice in a row, and in the same way! There must have been a reason.

Even though just recently the disciples had been part of the feeding of the five thousand, when it came to feeding the four thousand, they still asked Jesus, where can we get enough bread to feed them?!

They hadn’t remembered the miracle just done. Maybe Jesus was trying to teach them something.

I believe at the start of this year God wants to remind you of something:

He did it before and He will do it again.

He is able.

He can.

And He wants to.

For you!

How many times do we see God provide, heal, comfort, intervene, show up and then the next time around we aren’t quite sure if He will do it again?

Psalm 77 shows us to remember the good things God has already done, to remind ourselves of them:

“But then I recall all you have done, O Lord; I remember your wonderful deeds of long ago. They are constantly in my thoughts. I cannot stop thinking about your mighty works.” Psalms 77:11-12 NLT

Why? Because it builds your faith, and reminds you - God has done it before!!!

As the God that does not change, the God who is faithful to His Word, the God who keeps His promises, you can believe that the God who has done it before, can do it again!

So today, in whatever situation you are in, remember His works, remember the miracles He has done before, and know that He can perform a miracle for you again!

Ask Him for it, declare it done, thank Him for it, because we know He is able!
