Set Free To Serve

18 September 2020

A metal chain breaking

Slavery is evil.

Though slavery was abolished in 1833 with the Slavery Abolition Act (UK), and then in 1865 with the passing of the 13th Amendment (USA), 25 million people are currently robbed of their freedom through the plight of Human Trafficking.

Thankfully, in recent times this evil has become a major focus for governments, and non-government agencies alike. Though there is a long way to go, progress is being made.

Understanding Paul was inspired by the Holy Spirit to write this letter when slavery was an accepted norm adds weight to his words when he contrasts our freedom as ‘sons’ to the bondage of ‘slaves’. He then sums up his Holy Spirit inspired thoughts in the final chapter of Galatians by saying…

Gal 5:1 (NIV)

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free

Gal 5:13 (NIV)

You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.

Imagine how the early church would have heard these words as horror as slavery was everywhere around them.

What a contrast it must have been for them. Praise God we are free! But how does our freedom affect the lives of others who are still bound?

You are not just free, for freedom’s sake! You are free for a purpose! What purpose? To serve others humbly in love - To set the captives free!

How are you using your freedom to serve today?
